What Can Be Measured Can Be Managed

CPAs love numbers. But this week we’d like to share with you a different kind of number, called “the extra 2000 steps”.
This starts with my visit to a physician last week for a “regular” check up – my very first one after that magic age, 40 (but that’s long over due for me). After a very careful and thorough examination, the doctor told me that everything was great and just wait for blood and other test results. (The test results came in over the weekend: every box was marked with “normal” and the doctor even wrote “perfect results” before his signature).
But I know that I am still guilty of my sporadic exercising. The physician, now my first and formal “family doctor”, advised me to “put down the calculator and find time to do it regularly”.
I don’t know about you, but I take every doctor’s word very seriously. So I immediately started doing my homework on what’s the best way to keep myself "on track”.
Luckily, I found some numbers that don’t need a calculator. According to health experts, by taking an EXTRA 2,000 steps a day one can halt the one-to-three-pound yearly weight gain that plagues many adults. Of course, it has all the other positive impacts to one’s health.
Best of all, the experts found an ideal “tool” to keep people going. They advised that just get a pedometer and clip it to your waistband. Wear it for a week to find out your daily average steps. Then, up it by 2,000.
Studies show the pedometers work extraordinarily well. And we whole-heartily believe it.
Why?
It’s pretty consistent with what we have been “preaching” to our business clients all along: What You Can Measure, You Can Manage.
And we are serious about what we say. I will buy a pedometer for each of our team members and email this piece to my family doctor – he now has all my numbers (and my word).
